Chelation therapy is indicated
as part of a heavy metal detoxification regimen when symptoms or a
disease process is related to the presence of heavy metals. Testing
will also show elevated levels of these heavy metals. In order to
treat the toxicity, a chelating agent is administered intravenously,
which binds metals in the tissues and safely carries them out via
excretion in the urine. We are all exposed to metals in some form:
foods, water, dental amalgams, environmental contaminants and in
some vaccines. Some people also accumulate metals in their tissues
more readily than others and are less able to excrete them
naturally.
Many symptoms and conditions are
associated with heavy metal toxicity, including the following:
|
• Chronic Fatigue
Syndrome
• Multiple Sclerosis
• Benign Prostatic
Hypertrophy
• Hypothyroidism
• Migraines |
• Atherosclerosis
• Immune system
weaknesses
• Environmental and/or
chemical sensitivities
• Blood sugar
irregularities
• Mood disorders |
Testing
and Treatment
Prior to
administration of treatment, a Heavy Metal Challenge test is
necessary. This test involves checking the urine for the presence of
various heavy metals including mercury and lead after receiving a
dose of a chelating agent. It is the most accurate way of
determining the body's heavy metal burden. Based on the results of
this test, your naturopathic physician will be able to determine
what chelating agent is required, what dosage, and how many
chelation treatments will be necessary to achieve the desired
results.
Like any prescription
medication, chelating agents are safe in appropriate dosages, and
potentially harmful in wrong dosages. Licensure to practice
chelation requires rigorous additional training for any physician,
including naturopathic
physicians. Currently, intravenous chelation therapy is the most
effective treatment option for removal of metals from the body, and
is safe when administered by a licensed practitioner. |
